Preparing Your Quilt for Longarming

I will need the quilt top and backing, contact information, the batting choice, top thread and bobbin choice, and pattern or density of quilting you wish. When we meet, I will help you choose these.

QUILT PREPARATION BEFORE QUILTING YOUR QUILT ON A LONGARM

I understand that you have spent a lot of money and time piecing or applique on the quilt top and since you wish to finish your quilt properly, here are a few tips.

If you are using your own batting and back of quilt, it should be 8 inches longer and 8 inches wider than your top (that's 4 inches on each side)

Square your back of quilt, and if it has seams press them open, and remove selvages or clip them every 4 inches and press open.

Your top, back, and batting should be wrinkle-free, so press them!

If top or back is directional, indicate that by pinning a note to the top (up) edge

Check and remove loose threads from both sides of the top, batting, and back (a good time for that is during the pressing)

Stay stitch a pieced border along the edge and it will help it stay together better during quilting.

IF YOUR BACK IS PIECED, PLEASE BACKSTITCH AT THE EDGES OF YOUR QUILT SO IT WILL STAY TOGETHER WHEN STRETCHED ON THE LONGARM.

Avoid a “wavy” quilt border which puckers in the free-motion quilting

If you have a quilt design in mind, try scaling it to fit the area.
